A mother of two has gifted a wooden playhouse constructed by prisoners to the community. Prison inmates at Rolleston Prison in Selwyn built the playhouse as part of their trade training.

They handed over the completed wooden playhouse to the Selwyn Parenting Network to be included in their Christmas raffle drawing.

Mother Donates to Cause and Wins a Playhouse

Just like everyone else throughout Selwyn, Rachael Lindsay bought the raffle and emerged winner. She did not purchase the raffle tickets to win but only to support the Selwyn Parenting Network.

Her two children aged 10 and 12 are too big to play in the playhouse. So she gifted the won prize back to the raffle draw organizers; to be used by every family throughout the community.

Kate Webb, coordinator for the Selwyn Parenting Network praised Lindsay for the donation:

“She has totally stunned us all with the most kindest Christmas gesture of donating the playhouse to Selwyn Parenting Network in recognition of the work we do in the community — a believer in paying it forward and seeing other young Selwyn families enjoy it.”

Selwyn Parenting Network Organizes Community Services for Local Families

The Selwyn Parenting Network was established as a community group in 2010. Its main objective is to support parents and caregivers within the community. Since the earthquake that devastated the area sometime ago, the parenting network has been trying to up its services to struggling families within the community.

To do this, the network now organizes the following for families within the community:

  • Coffee catch-ups
  • Seminars for parents and caregivers
  • Community picnics
  • Speakers for workshop events
  • Fun activities for kids
  • Raffle draws and prizes for fundraising

In order to raise money for the network’s use, local businesses sponsored the raffle draw that held before Christmas. Webb appreciated the local businesses for their collaboration and thanked the inmates at Rolleston Prison for the playhouse prize.

Prisoners Who Constructed the Playhouse Are Also Fathers and Uncles

When asked about the collaboration, Webb said:

“It has been such a valuable exercise to collaborate with Rolleston Prison and showcase the trade skills that the offenders are learning as part of their rehabilitation. We are very thankful for the support of the prison and the men who have built this for us.”

Gerard Stokes, a principal instructor at Rolleston Prison also praised the inmates for their selfless service to the community. He said the inmates built the playhouse as a necessary skill to gaining trade qualifications.

And to give back to the community they left behind in some positive way. He added the prisoners that constructed the playhouse are fathers and uncles. So, they understand the benefits of the playhouse to local children.

If you’re a prison loved one, you know how hard it is to find rides to prisons. Join the Prison Rideshare Network and become a PrisonLifter for access to local prison visitor transportation companies, ride share programs and prison carpool partners going to the same prisons you visit.
